Project
The first phase of the TriCafé project began in 2017 and was completed in 2023, with a primary focus on Gorongosa National Park. The project is currently in its second phase, which began in 2024, expanding its scope to Chimanimani National Park.
This is a trilateral project between Portugal (School of Agriculture University of Lisbon - ISA), Brazil (Federal University of Espírito Santo - UFES), and Mozambique (Gorongosa National Park - NCG and Chimanimani National Park - PNC), funded by Portuguese Cooperation (Camões, I.P.) and Brazilian Cooperation (Brazilian Cooperation Agency).
The project continues institutional research partnerships established more than 20 years ago between Mozambique, Portugal, and Brazil, and follows on from the triangular/trilateral partnership established for the implementation of the TRICAFÉ Project - Sustainable coffee production in Gorongosa National Park in an integrated agroforestry system in the context of deforestation, climate change, and food security.
In this context, the aim is to start a new phase of the project, extending the intervention model to Chimanimani National Park and enhancing other ecosystem services beyond coffee.
Specifically, the project aims to:
Contribute to reversing deforestation and restoring natural biodiversity in Gorongosa and Chimanimani National Parks.
Promote coffee production in agroforestry systems and the production of other ecosystem services: mushrooms, carbon, and bioenergy.
Contribute to increasing the income and food security of rural communities in the region.
Reconciling biodiversity conservation and human development, based on coffee production in agroforestry systems and monetizing ecosystem services: coffee, native trees, carbon, and bioenergy.
